The tree for sale:, , I grafted this apple tree from a scion from a productive, existing tree in our garden. It has been container grown for about four years on MM106 rootstock so it will make a moderately vigorous tree about 10 to 12 feet tall in a few years, depending how you prune it. It has been pruned as a half standard and has a clear stem up to about 30" before it branches. The pruned height of the leader is approx 57" (measurements exclude the pot which is a 14"x 12")., , Image 1 is the tree in leaf last autumn and image 2 is the tree after its winter prune., , This is a good strong specimen which is now requiring planting out. Unfortunately we no longer have the room for it., , To be collected from Winchmore Hill, Amersham. Cash only please £35, , , Description:, , Newton Wonder is an old variety of English apple. It is mainly a cooker with a delicate, fluffy texture but late in the season can be eaten as a dessert apple, nutty, sweet and aromatic. It is less sharp than a Bramley. It cooks up beautifully, makes great apple sauce and baked apples and, as a bonus, keeps well into March, especially in the fridge. The apples are large, green turning red later in the season., , It is a late season, (October), spur-bearing tree. lt flowers in May and, although it is self-fertile, it does need to be pollinated in order to crop heavily. Pollen from other trees tends to produce tastier apples too. Crab apples are good pollinators but so are Braeburn, Charles Ross, Cox's Orange Pippin, Ellison's Orange, Fiesta, Golden Delicious and more.
